Animal Trapping Lures and Baits Lures and baits are essential to any successful trap line. There are many different brands of lure and baits on the market. I've included lure makers that have stood the test of time on my website . . . Lenon Lures are my best seller. We now carry the brands of Lure we use the most. This reduction in Brands has allowed us to speed up are shipping times on all trapping orders. We used to carry many more brands, but some were ordered so infrequently that we could serve you better by not stocking them. If you ever have a hard time finding any lure that we do not stock just give us a call and we will gladly tell you were you can purchase it or we will special order it for you. Lures can be broken down into four main categories. 1. Food lures which appeal to the animals hunger and include ingredients in their diet. 2. Curiosity lures which are lures that appeal to an animals curiosity. 3. Matrix lures which have glands and musk that appeal to a specific animals nature. Matrix or gland lures are used most often when trapping fox, coyote , bobcat and mink. They tend to make the furbearer not so suspicious, because they think one of their own kind was at the set. 4. Gland lures which also have the effect of making a critter think that another of his kind is on his turf. Urine is also excellent for spraying around sets. It also helps reduce the animals suspicion at sets. Important: When using lures and urines do not get on trap or the trap cover material. If you do, you will find traps sprung and tipped, as the animals will dig at your trap. You want the animal to step into your trap while it is investigating your lure and or bait in a dirt hole or other set. Trapping bait: You can buy your bait or get your own bait. I freeze fish and road kill deer during late summer and early fall. Thaw the fish when you are ready to use it. Sodium Benzoate can be added to keep it from spoiling so fast. Fish makes an excellent bait for mink, coon, and otter. Thaw your meat bait several weeks before you plan on using it. Leave it out in gallon jars with cheese cloth over it to keep flies out. When the desired taintless is reached, add Sodium Benzoate to stop the tainting process. When using bait in dirt hole sets I use a piece no larger than a small egg. One of the best baits to use is beaver or muskrat meat. Use both at your land and water sets. Muskrat and beaver meat seems to appeal to almost all furbearing animals including muskrat and beaver. Weasel meat also seems to be one the best weasel baits. What cannibals! Note: when using bait, do not leave in the open uncovered where birds can see your bait. Place the bait in dirt holes, pocket sets or cover with leaves. When making sets, I use some with bait & lure, some with just bait and some with just lure.
