Types of Traps Conibears (same as Body Trap) Conibears are designed to catch an animal as it attempts to pass through the trap. The sizes range from a #110 conibear which is 4" x 4" designed for muskrat size animals to a #330 conibear which is 10" x 10" and is designed to catch beaver. Extreme care must be used when setting the larger conibears as they can kill pets and are dangerous if you get snapped by one. The larger conibears are used primarily for beaver and otter. The trap is set under the water where pets can not be caught. Trap setters are usually needed for the #220 and up conibears. In nuisance control, the #160 is effective for raccoon, skunk and opossum. The #110 is the only conibear with one spring; the rest have two springs. Leghold Traps - Coilsprings and Longsprings Coilsprings
The coilsprings range in size from #1 with a 4" jaw spread designed for mink size animals and sizes large enough to catch coyote and wolf. The coilsprings are compact in size which makes them ideal for land trapping and dirt sets. The trap is much more easy to conceal on land and the coils give it plenty of strength. Longsprings Longsprings range in size from #0 for rats to double longsprings #5 which is a beaver trap. The longsprings are a favorite of many water trappers as the extra length and size of the trap makes it more stable at set and the extra weight is beneficial for drowner sets. Live Cage Traps Live Cage Traps are designed to catch animals alive, usually for release to another area. Box traps range from house mouse to large dog sizes. Snares Where legal, snares are very effective do to their light weight. Snares are available in sizes from rabbit to bear. Or you can make your own from components. Snares are also very effective in winter, as they do not get covered with snow and ice like conventional traps. |
