Trapping the Weasel

The weasel can be found throughout many parts of North America and the rest of the world. Tracks in the snow are the easiest way to tell that weasels are present. This is also the time to trap them as there fur turns white in the winter.

Weasel are easily live trapped baiting with fresh meat.

Weasels are long and slender and max at 14" in length.  Therefore, small traps are needed to trap them.  The ordinary rat trap can be used.  Also, #0 and #1 longsprings or the smaller conibears work well.  Fresh and bloody bait is the key to catching the weasel. One the best weasel bait is the meat of a weasel itself.

A good set can be constructed in small hollow logs with the bait placed up inside the log. This set is quite weatherproof, as the trap can also be set inside the log.

Tying common rat traps 5 inches off the ground to a tree and baiting will also take weasel.
